Bottom Bracket Compendium
*This article first appeared in Ride UK (#77) and is reproduced here by kind permission of Ride UK.
You may remember that 2 years ago in issue 58 I wrote about the new Euro Bottom brackets that were starting to pop up on some frames. I also predicted that there would be some other new standards to look forward to. Well now they seem to be starting to come through so I thought now would be a good time to try to review the whole lot… Hold on to your hats, it’s going to be dull…
Monolevers
-These are NOT available yet. These are PROTOTYPES. We will tell you when they are coming out, when we know.
– Three lever handle shapes options will be available. The handle shapes are small (as shown in Transworld(TOP)), medium (MIDDLE) and trigger (identical to the original trigger lever shape(LOWER)). They all use the same 7/8, front clamping, slim bracket.
– The pivot and clamp hardware is identical and replaceable to address the possible long-term thread stripping issues that can happen with most levers.
– single cable only(hence the name MONOlever)
– A dual cable (modulever) version that uses the same lever shapes will be available at a later date.
Four is the magic number
This weekend, at the Vans triple crown, Mike Aitken and Gary Young got fourth place in Dirt and Street, respectively. I heard their runs were awesome, and everyone in Salt Lake had a good time.
Congrats to them, even though I bet they were more fun to watch then 1st-3rd. But I wasn’t even there, so who am I to talk, or to bet…I was in Atlantic City avoiding “tonys” and loosing money. Craps doesn’t have as good odds as they say. I just continued to say “crap”. Maybe I should have bet on 4 on the the roulette table.

We got a bunch of samples today. They are looking good. So far everything we got is correct. Which only means that the odds that they go into full production soon, are very good.
We will show some of them at the SubDivision BMX trade show in Binghamton, NY, May 27th-29th.
After the show Nuno and I will be going on a trails mission, so if anyone has any good spots in Long Island, don’t hesitate to tell us.
There is a contest in Arizona this weekend. You should go.
Matt Beringer was riding with the T-1 guys last week in Utah.
Ever heard of Critical Mass? Its the last friday of every month, and its a ride to promote bicycle riding and awareness. While its mostly road riders, I went to the local CM meeting spot last week and ended up meeting 3 BMXers that live in my neighborhood. Its a fun time riding in the streets usually dominated by cars. I found a ton of street spots I probably never would have seen otherwise. promote the idea of “one less car” or as FBM would put it “Blow up your car, ride a bike”.

Steering Geometry
*This article first appeared in Ride UK (#76) and is reproduced here by kind permission of Ride UK.
Someone requested that I do a tech column on head angles and steering geometry. I wasn’t sure at first if this was a worthwhile subject, after all, there isn’t that much variation available is there? Most frames have a head angle of 74 and a half! Degrees and most forks have one and a quarter inch legs with dropouts that stick out just enough to get a peg on.
GARY YOUNG ON MACNEIL
Gary Young is now a member of the MacNeil team. It became official on Saturday April 24. The entire crew at MacNeil is really excited to have him and we feel that he will fit in very well with our team. -Jay Miron
Don’t bother asking if he is still on Odyssey, he is. Its just a frame deal, Odyssey is still Gary’s parts sponsor. If I’m not mistaken, Gary will be riding the Miron frame. -Jim Bauer
